River Trading Technology
A Special Message from Glenn Neely
For most traders, trading is a 3-step process:
1. Decide what you think is going to happen (i.e. forecast)
2. Enter the market
3. Manage the position with stops and objectives
After pursuing that 3-step process (Forecasting, Entering,
Managing)
for 20 years, 5 years ago
I began to
question its validity.
Why? Even though my forecasting abilities (over the prior 20
years) had improved several orders of magnitude, improvements in my
trading were only incremental.
That perplexed me for two decades and was extremely frustrating.
How could my forecasting improve
so much and my trading so little...what
was I missing?
It dawned on me that each step of that 3-pronged process (Forecasting,
Entering, Managing) was plagued with problems.
First, even if you are good at forecasting, you probably won't be
right more than about 50% of the time.
Second, even if you are right about your forecast, your entry may
not be ideal.
- If your entry was great, your stop may have been too close or
you exited too soon.
- If you give each step of this process a 50% rate of success
(probably too high), by the time you reach the end you will achieve
(at best) a 12.5% success rate.
Is there any wonder why
trading is so difficult for most traders?
Near the edge of a market is where turbulent, unpredictable
behaviour occurs. On the other hand, price moves fast and directional in
the middle of the river.
Markets are choppy,
violent, and have non-directional action near the perimeter of the price
action and smooth, orderly and fast movement in the center of a price
action.
By understanding the behaviour of the various traders in
a market and determining
"who's in control " Neely River Theory" allows you to:
1.
Determine the "flow"
of the market's price action
2. And so know
a. When and Where
it is
safe to enter
b.
Where to place stops
c. When the
market will consolidate
d.
When the market will accelerate
e. When it is
time to raise stops
f.
When to exit your
positions and Take Profit.
